Cardiac Risk in the Young
Cardiac Risk in Youth (CRY) and The Windsor Boys School Boat Club (WBSBC) -
14th Jan 2025
This screening is for those aged 14 to 35 years only.
If your child is aged 14+ please consider getting them screened at the private screening event on January 14th at The Windsor Boys School.
Why - Sudden Cardiac Arrest in the young (14-35) is a sadly something that affects up to 12 young people every week in the UK, including those not participating in sport. There have been some high profile cases in recent years. Screening once for the causal conditions that might not present any symptoms has saved lives, including one of our own school pupils who found at the last screening that without treatment he likely would not have lived to his 19th birthday.
In summary, screening with an electrocardiogram (ECG) is aimed at identifying people with conditions such as heart muscles disorders or electrical faults of the heart. Although many of the conditions are not ‘curable’ they are all treatable and treatments range from lifestyle adaptations to drug therapy or, in some cases, surgery. The age of 14 is the average minimal age of physical maturation when these issues can be identified.
Cardiac incidents can take place at any time. They are not limited to high-intensity sport; they may occur just jogging across the park or when asleep at night. The screenings program is not just for people who play sport, but is a priority for anyone involved in active sports. Defibrillators can help some survive if used immediately, but however, clearly it is valuable to check for any conditions in advance and avoid the unknown taking a life.
What are we offering -
The WBSBC has teamed with the charity RALPHH to bring a day of private testing to the school for a much reduced cost of £75 per person (half the cost of a private appointment) - these screenings are usually very hard to book due to high demand.
